A recent study about diets was just released. Researchers performed a meta-analysis (one of the best kinds of studies) comparing different types of diets. Researchers found that people on low carbohydrate diets nineteen more pounds within six months than those who were not on any kind of diet. Comparatively, participants on low fat diets lost on average of seventeen pounds within a six month span. The caveat? At twelve months, there was no difference in weight loss between the two types of low fat vs. low carbohydrate diets.

Despite the increased popularity with having double mastectomies, they don’t increase cancer survival rates. About 189,000 women with early stage breast cancer were analyized – those who had breast conserving surgery had an 83.2% survival rate versus those who had double mastectomies at 81.2%. Choose your doctor wisely. Single mastectomies were at about 79.9% survival rate.

Heart failure is a nasty disease where your heart loses the ability to effectively pump out blood to the reast of your body. The result is a back-up of blood/fluid into the lungs. Those that can fit an hour of daily moderate activity/exercise can cut their risk for developing heart failure by almost fifty percent. Add an additional forty percent to that by eating daily fruits.

Generally speaking, second hand smoke from e-cigarettes is far less than traditional cigarettes but they’re not without their chemical exposure. A recent study found that a soda tax for adolescents is the best strategy for reducing obesity – mind you the proposed tax will be a one cent sodas, energy drinks, sweetened drinks, and other like drinks. For those that follow this blog on a regular basis, I’ve stated multiple times that I’m formally against food tax policies as a way to manage public health.
