1. Are Hospitals Contributing To The Rise Of Superbugs?

According to the CDC, about half of hospitalized patients receive antibiotics. Some hospitals however, prescribe up to three times as many antibiotics as other hospitals. The problem: sometimes patients come in with symptoms resembling a bacterial infection. The reality: the patients may well have a viral infection in which antibiotics are useless. Personally working in a hospital, this is something I come across fairly regularly. The over-prescription of antibiotics in hospitals contributes to superbugs that become resistant to antibiotics over time. The CDC is now working on guidelines to decrease the prescription rate of antibiotics.

2. Are You Frequently Angry?

You might want to work on that as you’re at a higher risk for strokes and heart attacks. Which makes sense, as higher levels of stress can trigger the body’s flight or fight response, raising blood pressure and increasing the oxygen demands on the brain and heart.

3. Are You From Mississippi?

Congratulations, you’re living in the most obese state. On the flip side, those from Montana are the least obese. This is all according to a Gallup-Healthways Well-Being Index. Naturally, the states with higher obesity levels had higher problems of chronic disease. See how your state ranks.

4. Second Infant Possibly Cured Of HIV

Big news on the HIV front. The second infant born to a mother with HIV and was born with HIV itself is now possibly cured of HIV. The new treatment involves doctors loading up infants with antiretroviral drugs within the first four hours of birth. After nine months there has been no detectable amounds of the virus in the patient’s body. If the findings hold true, the patient will live a life free of HIV virus and she will make the second child cured of HIV.

The Worst Health and Fitness News This Week

1. High Protein Diet “As Bad As Smoking”

That’s what the media would have you thinking and putting the spin on it they sure did. According to two new studies (and the media reporting), high protein diet’s are just as bad as smoking and lead to cancer and diabetes in meddle age adults. But does it really? Ehh….

-Do you really think that eating a high protein diet puts you at a death risk as high as smoking? Likely not. Probably not. Most certainly not.
-Cosider the type of protein consumed – was it processed meats? Was it meats high in nitrites? The type of protein consumed matters as much as how much a person is consuming.
-Consider the author’s words favoring high carbohydrate diets – which are linked to diabetes and obesity as well.
-Consider the simple fact that too much of anything for you is bad for you. Most of us probably get more than enough protein. Find out how much protein your body needs. We’ve set up a simple chart for you.
-Oddly enough, in this study the researchers found that high protein diets in elderly patients were beneficial.
-Also, how does activity level factor into these results?

Meanwhile, researchers at Deaken University have found that eating three to four servings of lean meat each week combined with a strength training program in elderly patients helps to keep the mind and body in peak condition.
